Abstract

The situation of seat belt legislation is outlined and belt effectiveness assessed on the basis of the accident statistics. Methods used in the seat belt surveys conducted by the BASt are described. Again and again the observations of these surveys have raised the question of the factors affecting belt utilization, which are briefly discussed. A summary outline of belt usage by rear seat occupants (adults and children) is given.
