The effectiveness of speed limits on rural roads in the German Federal Republic.

Abstract

Statistical data are given on traffic volume, average speed and number of fatalities in Germany. Driver behaviour regarding overtaking and lane change manoeuvres is studied together with driver's willingness to observe speed limits and the influence of the latter on driving patterns. Details are given of a device which automatically records the speed of all vehicles in a lane and warns individual drivers that the have exceeded the prescribed speed limit.
