Abstract

This paper compares the effectiveness in winter of snow tires with studs, without studs, and with controlled protrusion studs; elastomeric tire attachments and reinforced steel tire chains; and standard bias-belted highway tires. Correlations between each wheel combination and temperature variation were obtained for each set of tests which are carried out under various weather and environmental conditions. The discussion of E. Southern is appended to this article.
