Abstract

This paper summarizes the role and present situation of the VICS link in VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) and examines how the VICS link concerns information providing by VICS. The VICS link is a method for reference to the occurrence location of an event as essential road traffic information by means of 3 media (radio-wave beacons, infrared beacons, FM multiplex broadcasting) and at 3 information indication modes (text, simple graphics, map) in information distribution from VICS. This link method has enabled VICS to achieve efficient information distribution to onboard systems. The VICS link is maintained under close relationship between public and private sectors. The experience of its operation is not only beneficial to real-time ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), but also gives a lesson to similar systems in the future. (A*)
