Abstract

Near-term and exploratory rulemaking activities described in NHTSA's "5-Year Plan for Motor Vehicle Safety Rulemaking" are studied. Accidents and conditions in which the various Standards can have effects are identified. Changes in the relative frequencies of the accident types and conditions are projected to the year 2000 on the basis of projections of the population, of highway use, and of the vehicle fleet. Changes between 1977 and 2000 in the proportion of traffic-deaths affected by the various Standards are discussed.
