Abstract

The effects of increased enforcement levels on driver behaviour and safety at urban intersections are described. The results of the study indicated that visible police presence at an urban intersection can significantly reduce the incidence of traffic violations. The most significant improvements for reducing violations occurred when 1 police officer was visible for 1 hour a day. Further increases in effort did not produce an appreciable improvement.
