Abstract

France's experience with legislation under which use of seat belts in the front seat of private cars became compulsory outside the city from 1st July 1973, is described. Evidence indicates the number of deaths is multiplied by 2.7 when the seat belt is not used. Compulsory use of seat belts together with a complementary measure limiting speed was found to be the more effective measure.
