Abstract

The introduction of motor patrols reduced the number and severity of road accidents. This resulted in the suggestion that an increase in the police strength of about 10% might be expected to result in a reduction in casualties of about 25%. This report summarizes work so far carried out on the effects of police presence on road user behaviour with regard to: speed, traffic light, pedestrian crossings, no waiting regulations, halt signs and bus lanes.
