Abstract

This paper proposes a velocity data compression method for reducing redundancy in the traffic information. It focuses on the repeatability of velocity between adjacent roads, and adopts the variable length coding method. In addition, the message format for transmitting traffic information is defined. It is called the velocity compression (VC) method. To verify the efficiency of proposed scheme, experimental environment is built up in a laboratory and experiments are executed by transmitting traffic data with and without VC method. The experimental results shows that our scheme utilizes Digital Multimedia Broadcasting network resource more efficiently rather than a method delivering uncompressed traffic information.
