Abstract

A traffic signal controller optimized for stand-alone operation and which copes with changing traffic volume was developed. This controller (Local Controller) when located at an intersection automatically generates signal parameters that minimise traffic delays at the intersection in real time based on data from a sensor installed at a point on the road upstream of the intersection. Many Local Controller units can be used to build a hierarchical system that will conduct offset catch-up operation when used in combination with a host (Local Master). A simulator was connected to the Local Controller, and used a time-tested simulation to verify its successful operation. For the covering abstract see ITRD E209471.
