This paper introduces a new accident recording system which has been developed by Daimler-Benz in cooperation with DEKRA (Deutschen Kraftfahrzeug Uberwachungsverein) to examine the correlation between active safety and accident avoidance. The system is based on a four-page questionnaire which mainly records the active safety aspects of real car accidents. Out of the analyses made until up to now, results from two types of accidents are discussed, namely accidents involving pedestrians and accidents involving a single car in turn.
