Abstract

Various rear light systems are investigated on a "followcar" simulator under night driving conditions. The reaction time of the driver to operate the brakes can be influenced by changing the colour and/or the arrangement of the lights. Failure of the brake lights results in a 25% increase in reaction time. A 16% reduction in reaction time is achieved by using a pair of green taillamps immediately adjacent to the red brake lights.
