Abstract

This issue of Current Tropics includes over 65 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on driving and the elderly in the context of increasingly elderly populations in the industrialised countries. Topics include identification of the effects of ageing on driving skills, assessment of driving performance, simulation and identification of high risk elderly drivers. Abstracts are included on specific areas of possible impairment for elderly drivers, such as vision reaction time, judgement of speed and especially safe gap judgement, and driving performance with divided attention; also on particular safety problems which occur with night time driving, lane changing, junction handling, especially when turning across oncoming traffic. These items have been selected from the material added to the TRL Library Database between 1998 and 2000. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
