Abstract

The nature of variable message signs has changed dramatically over recent years. The effects of signs on traffic and road users behaviour is of importance in deciding on future investments. This paper brings together measurements and issues from individual system evaluations that have been performed across Europe. It considers how signs are currently being used, summarises results quantifying their performance and looks at their future integration into wider driver information systems. (A)
