Abstract

This paper reviews the current trend towards demand management and the role that technology can play in the shaping of transport policies. Electronic equipment being used in various European countries for road tolls is briefly outlined. The opportunities offered by the UK's National Motorway Communications Network are discussed and projects currently underway or plannned are described including a) enhanced signalling; b) alternative route advice; c) variable speed control; d) electronic motorway tolling; and e) travel and traffic information. The use of video cameras for automatic number plate reading is considered. A trial on the M20 motorway is described which involved the use of machine vision the use of machine vision and variable message signs. A list of applications for machine vision is provided.
