Abstract

The goal of this project was to develop necessary adjustments to periodic technical inspections due to the growing number of electric and hybrid vehicles found on public streets. To that end, the relevant components of the electric drivetrain of various vehicles were identified and their failure performances analyzed. FSD created a simulation model to determine the degradation effects of individual components and functions on the system as a whole. The results that were collected formed the basis for the identification of traffic safety and environmentally critical components and their functions. These model predictions were validated with real vehicle tests. In addition, 2,560 vehicles with electric powertrains were examined in a field test. From these results, change recommendations for inspections and standards could be derived. For a large part of these examinations, the use of diagnostic data is an appropriate method. Provision 47 of the amendments to the German road traffic regulations already takes into account the new drive concepts in many areas. Therefore, only small amendments are recommended to §19 and the associated example catalog, §29, Appendix VIIIa and Appendix VIIId of the StVZO, and to the general inspection guidelines. The development of high-voltage guidelines is recommended for carrying out the inspection points in a high-voltage system. Currently, a few important inspection procedures technically cannot yet be implemented. Therefore, changes to the international building and operating regulations are required. This will need to be encouraged by the EU/UNECE. There are additional research needs over and above this project to consider these vehicles intensively and observe their further development so that necessary impact on the periodic technical inspections can be detected in a timely manner.
