Abstract

With LUTE (urban land use, transport and environment) modelling capability and GIS technology, there will be great potential benefits for developing an integrated LUTE-GIS modelling system. The integrated system can not only alleviate data acquisition, data input and data visualisation problems, and efficiently manage large spatial databases, but can also enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the models. By taking full advantage of GIS, which relieves the development effort for data input/output and graphic presentation, urban modellers are now offered a great opportunity to improve the applicability and usefulness of their models. This paper discusses new developments in GIS technology, in particular the GIS components that allow for dynamic mapping and GIS functionality to be embedded into existing applications. The methodologies of LUTE-GIS integration are described. A prototype LUTE-GIS modelling system is formulated based on an existing LUTE model (CityPlan) and GIS components to show the feasibility and benefits of the integrated system. (A)
