Abstract

The concept of automatic brake systems is receiving greater attention due to their potential for improving safety and mitigating the effects of collisions. Because of this interest, it is forecast that such systems will soon be available to the driving public. The subject of this paper is the investigation of automatic emergency braking as a means of avoiding or reducing the severity of collisions. The results of the investigation indicate that reducing the impact speed to 30 km/h or less can significantly reduce the number of fatalities. And for wet or dry road conditions, a sufficiently large deceleration level of 0.4 G (1.0 G =9.81 m/sec sq.) can be employed to do so. This paper also introduces an automatic emergency brake control system that increases the probability of avoiding a collision without neither limiting nor taking priority for operation of the vehicle away from the driver.
