Abstract

Why should emergency physicians care whether the force required to break a femur is 10 kN or something less? At first glance, this may seem as esoteric as caring whether the patient with an ankle fracture fell with the foot inverted or everted, but the issues surrounding the research presented in this issue of NHTSA Notes and its results actually do affect our daily work. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) main job is to promote and support behavioral programs, grants, and automobile industry regulation, with the ultimate goal of saving the lives of vehicle occupants and other road users.
