Abstract

The emergence of state departments of transportation since 1959 has been for a multitude of reasons: emphasis on modal interdependency, socio-economic implications of growth in the urban and suburban areas, and so forth. This paper discusses the role of state DOT's in addressing and providing leadership in the transportation area.
