Abstract

The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) resulted in agreement by the participants to chart a global course toward "sustainable development". One of the areas selected for action was the field of transportation. Sustainable development in the context of transportation means that improvements in mobility, accessibility, and safety should not result in long term environmental impacts that degrade the carrying capacity. This paper discusses the implications this has for the planning and deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traces recent progress in the US and elsewhere, and concludes that the concept of sustainability represents a significant challenge to ITS global environmental trends.
