Abstract
This paper discusses a number of emerging technologies that are being applied to provide traffic management center decision support, and surveillance and communication functions in the California Advanced Transportation Management Systems Testbed in the USA. The technologies include artificial intelligence techniques such as artificial neural networks and knowledge-based expert systems; video image processing; and vehicle-roadside, spread-spectrum radio, and long-range satellite communication.
