Abstract

In order to assist the Auckland Regional Council in evaluating options for the reduction of exhaust emissions from bus fleets, a spreadsheet based model has been developed. The model can be used to quantify fuel consumption and emissions performance of an existing bus fleet and provides the tools to evaluate technology options for improving the emissions performance of the fleet. The model has provision to break the bus fleet down by vehicle age and technology categories. Once the fleet composition is determined the model predicts emissions rates for each vehicle type and combines this with vehicle kilometres travelled to predict total tonnes of pollutants and an environmental rating factor. The model also includes provision for evaluating emissions reduction strategies. Strategies built into the model include changes in fuel specification, introduction of exhaust after treatment devices, introduction of latest technology buses including alternative fuel options.
