Abstract

The aim of this paper is to indicate what kind of energy benefits can be obtained from having a high speed railway transport system in the European community. This is illustrated by the introduction of the high- speed TGV train between the Paris region and South- East France. The TGV's great attractiveness and competitiveness vis- a- vis aircraft and cars have turned it into a commercial success, thus changing transport patterns to its own advantage.
