Abstract

This article provides statistics of the energy consumption of the various transport modes in Rio de Janeiro, for various years ranging from 1977-1984, and 1977-1986. Statistics for numbers of passengers using the various transport modes are also provided for the same years. All modes of transport in the region of Rio de Janeiro have been considered. A model has been made to calculate the energy consumption using different variables: annual distance run in kilometres, sales of petrol in the region, diesel consumption by bus-companies, electricity consumption by railways etc. The most difficult problem to be solved was that of the calculation of petrol consumption by private cars as there was no information directly available and so the problem was resolved by difference and comparison with predictive models of consumption already in existence. An estimate has been made to indicate the modes of transport which consume most fuel. This paper concludes with the principal measures which the authorities responsible for urban transport could introduce in order to save energy.
