Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential for the long term reduction of greenhouse gases produced by transport. The capacity for significant reductions in transport energy demand exists with current technology. A rationalisation of the use of private cars, greater use of public transport and the penetration of energy efficient technologies, could benefit from price incentives. It is concluded that a balance of price incentives and planning restrictions with due regard for the poorer sections of the population may be the best way to encourage judicious use of the private car and truly reflect the environmental and social cost.
