Engine design in the 90s : Computer-Aided Engineering CAE simulation to ensure realistic drafts from the start.

Abstract

In the early phase of computer-aided engineering (CAE) development, simulation supports the designer in choosing appropriate drafts among the various concepts considered. As a typical example of the approach taken, the paper presents the simulation of cylinder charge and flow conditions with a specific view to variable camshaft management, flow and mixture formation conditions in the catalytic converter, and the acoustic control of the intake system. Focusing on the optimisation of component structure in the case of connecting rods, simulation of elasticity in the basic engine, as well as simulation of valve and chain drive, the paper also presents specific examples of how the design of components may be optimised. Finally, considering the overall development process, the paper specifies the requirements made of CAE and defines future demands in the case of CAE.
