Abstract

This paper overviews the development of a Driver Safety and Education Strategy, a proposed blueprint for improving the safety and competence of drivers in Queensland. The paper explains the rationale for adopting a strategic approach to driver management; describes the method used to develop the draft strategy; overviews the research findings and policy development underpinning the strategy; and describes the consultation processes being utilised to assist in finalising the strategy. An audit of the current Queensland driver management system was conducted focusing on key outcomes, such as road safety, efficiency, social justice and environmental sustainability. A review of Australian and international driver management activity suggested that scope exists to optimise the performance of the Queensland system. In particular, there is a need to consider new strategies and actions which can bolster current activity and promote a more integrated approach to driver management.
