Abstract

The intent of this paper is to describe a commercial vehicle safety project undertaken by the Highway Safety Branch of the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Highways. Due to the extreme mountainous conditions in British Columbia, heavy vehicle operators must take extra precautions in navigating down steep grades in order to prevent downhill runaway situations. Recognizing the potential hazards for heavy trucks, the project was initiated to develop methods of assisting drivers in safely descending steep grades. Since the project is on-going, the focus of this paper will be on the work completed to date. This includes a review of the commercial vehicle fleet in B.C., the new sign designs and sign conventions, the production of the educational video, and the results from the testing of the assention lane and arrestor bed runaway lanes.
