Several aspects of intersection safety; Report for the CROW project Assessment Framework for Intersections. In 2013/2014 the CROW (Technology platform for transport, infrastructure and public space) will determine the basic characteristics for intersections and roundabouts. Correspondingly, CROW wants to establish an assessment framework that is meant for choosing an intersection type. The aspects that are to be considered in any case are the expected traffic volume, the traffic composition, the available space and the road safety. SWOV has worked out the road safety aspect for this framework; this report presents the results. The intended framework provides for a shortcoming in the current traffic engineering manuals. So far only a limited number of handles is available (in the Netherlands) considerations about crossroads types. These handles have been important sources for this report. In addition, a data file was used in which road, traffic and crash characteristics are included; this data file has been compiled by SWOV.
