Some micro and macro issues of future transport. On the one hand one might state that research and development in the field of transport is more developed than in the other comparable sectors of energy use - households and industry. Yet, major developments have rather taken place in energy savings of fossil origin resources than in renewables, leaving future ways of energy generation, such as the operational market issues of hydrogen propulsion, largely at the conceptual stage. In this paper it is argued that it might be more successful to prepare, conceive, build and evaluate real life prototypes. Prototyping can only lead to satisfactory results if the conceptual basis is sound. In this paper two potential courses of action are suggested. One in the field of micro energy generation – ultra light fuel cell propelled vehicles; the other at macro level – a container terminal. (Author/publisher) Nederlands abstract: Men kan enerzijds stellen dat research and development op het gebied van vervoer verder ontwikkeld is dan op vergelijkbare gebieden van energiegebruik – huishoudens en industrie c.a.. Substantiële resultaten zijn immers bereikt bij energiebesparing van fossiele brandstoffen. Dat is echter veel minder het geval waar het gaat om toekomstige vormen, zoals met name de brandstofceltechnologie. Vooral de productie-, opslag- en distributie-eisen staan nog in de kinderschoenen. In dit paper wordt er op aangedrongen prototypen voor te bereiden, te bouwen en te evalueren. Bevredigende resultaten kunnen overigens slechts verkregen worden indien er sprake is van een doordachte conceptuele basis. Als voorbeeld worden twee potentiële ontwikkelingsrichtingen aangegeven. Op micro-niveau het ‘prototyperen’ van ultralichte brandstofcelvoertuigen; op macro-niveau het ‘prototyperen’ van een containerterminal. (Author/publisher)
