Abstract

Civil engineering solutions may reduce the outside luminance so that other physiological processes become dominant. In particular, it seems that the influence of slow photochemical adaptation processes is much smaller than the influence of rapid neuronal adaptation processes. The consequences on the practical design will be discussed, not only for the lighting of the entrance of long tunnels but also for the lighting of short tunnels and underpasses.
