Abstract

The goal of the following project is the development of a workload model to assess driver information systems for motorcycle. Therefore the field of workload measurement, description and effects on riding a motorbike needs to be addressed. Different studies with the motorcycle simulator led to first findings concerning infotainment on motorcycles. The main focus lies on studies investigating workload with means of the developed motorcycle riding simulator. N = 14 to 20 people took part in the following studies: - Validation of motorcycle simulation as a research method, - Description of workload while riding a motorcycle, - Comparison of workload between driving a car and riding a motorcycle, - Description of consequences of glances away from the road by means of occlusion (black out scenery for a certain period of time while riding continuous)., - Investigation of effects of different secondary tasks on motorcycle ride. It was shown that workload of motor cycle riders is a promising and not yet sufficiently covered field of research. Motorcycle simulation offers a good opportunity to investigate riders' workload within boundaries of normal vehicle dynamics. For this reason further research has to be conducted, especially since a proper simulation offers the possibility to investigate rider assistance and information systems on motorcycles without endangering the riders. Concerning technical aspects of the current state of research, one must say that there is the need to improve the handling of motorcycle simulations. With regards to contents, information systems are clearly a hazard source for motorcycle riders. Riders can not sufficiently estimate their riding performance while interacting with an information system. Therefore it is essential to take this finding in account when developing systems like these. (Author/publisher)
