Bystanders and other first responders provide first aid before the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) arrives. In the majority of serious injury accidents, EMS arrives more than ten minutes after the crash. There may be a need for immediate care of the injured. The injuries are likely to be blows to their head or torso that may impair breathing or cause a loss of blood. Immediate restoration of breathing, and aid for shock may have survival value. (A)
