Abstract

This article describes the testing of newly developed pile installation machinery, planned for use in the construction of a cut and cover tunnel for a new road section in Norway. The Silent-Piler uses side friction on installed piles as support for pressing down the next sheet pile. Time studies indicated that installation time would be twice as long compared with the use of conventional pile driving equipment; but vibration, ground surface deformation and noise levels were considerably reduced. This may enable extended working hours in the day.
