Abstract

A conflict exists between those who create the traffic and those who live on a street. The San Francisco Planning department has carried out a study of the quality of the environment along some of the city's main traffic streets to try to find out what effect traffic has on the street as a living environment. Criteria taken into account were: 1) traffic hazard; 2) stress, noise, and pollution;, 3) privacy and home territory; 4) neighbouring and visiting, and 5) identity and interest.
