Abstract

The issues of developmental transitions, of the change of transition mechanisms that have been hypothesized, and of the relevance of a longitudinal perspective are summarized. Because the general criterion of a longitudinal- developmental design is repeated individual observation, this review also devotes special attention to the role assigned by different authors to individual differences in development.
