An apparatus has been designed to monitor automatically the speed and headway of vehicles in traffic lanes at equipped but unattended road sites. The equipment also provides a measure of wheelbase for classification and vehicle spacing calculation purposes. Signals from vehicle detectors at the remote sites are sent over G.P.O. lines via a data link to a central processing unit and data, in the form of the elapsed-time periods together with the time of day, are recorded on punched paper tape for subsequent analysis by computer.
