Abstract

The general objective of the content oriented activities in the ERA-NET TRANSPORT project is to develop a shared perspective for European transport research and identify the research areas and themes in transport policies that are most fit for co-operation and integration. The results of these activities give guidance to the testing process of fields of research co-operation and integration. On the one hand it generates the initial momentum. On the other hand it outlines strategic issues of research of common interest in a European Strategic Transport Research Agenda towards lasting co-operation and integration of transport re-search in Europe. Against this background 2 complementary approaches are combined. First, the establishment of a road map of trans-national transport research in Europe for the short term. Secondly, the conduct of a (thematic) transport future foresight to foster a shared vision on future research areas. The road map exercise gives an overview of existing transport research programmes underway and in preparation. The rationale of this activity is to realise quick wins by linking ongoing programming efforts in national context. Essentially this is a pragmatic bottom-up approach. The future foresight looks in depth into research needs for the long-term. On the Community level new technologies and standards for interoperability are developed. National and regional authorities are confronted with similar challenges of implementation and adaptation to changing circumstances. Therefore it is important to establish a common view of the demand for transport research in the future (A). For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E212343.
