Abstract

Nine examples of speed reducing measures on major and residential roads on the boundary of and within built-up areas. Not in all cases the measures did work. The snag is that passage must be granted to all vehicles, including lorries and trucks. This permits car drivers to proceed at relatively high speeds. The design should fit into the expectation pattern of the road users and uniformity is very important. More attention should be paid to exchanges of good and bad experiences and to the relation between speed reduction and road design.
