The research project "Road Experience" investigates how road users experience the road and its environment, and how driver behaviour is influenced by this experience. In the first part of this project an inventory was made of the concepts used in this topic. A measurement scale was also constructed using the results obtained from three experiments. It was concluded that road users experience of the road environment is a measurable concept, and that this may reveal differences between environments, which are independent of other situational determinants.
