Abstract

This report describes the theoretical background for research on the "Aesthetic experience or appraisal of the road environment." The three- part foundation, at which research should aim, are placed in a frame; visual perception, activation, and subjective judgement. For each domain of research the most relevant theoretical concepts are presented that may be used for a model of the influence of road environment characteristics on driving behaviour.
