Abstract

Most of the existing time headway models usually consider the all vehicles on a single lane traffic stream and sometimes on multiple lane traffic streams. The headway distribution models are used for capacity estimation and safety analysis. However, with the advent of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), time headway distribution of probes became important for incident detection/management and Advanced Transportation Information System (ATIS). This paper identified the statistical distribution and its parameters of probes' time headway on a single and multiple lane traffic streams using simulation approaches. It was found that the time headway of probes follows the same statistical distribution of the general vehicles. In addition, parameter values of the probes' statistical distribution were found to be the function of market penetration and number of lanes.
