Abstract

This paper considers the problem of estimating concentrations of area under various curves, including probability density functions. An example is estimating the mode of a function over a certain interval. The problem of estimating locations of modes of functions and centers of large mass concentrations occurs in several contexts in traffic flow. Three such contexts are considered. These include traffic volumes, areal density analyses and time headways.
