Abstract

Electronic toll collection (ETC) has already penetrated the automotive society in Japan because it is a comfortable and convenient system for the driver. Whether that is the only reason is questioned. Approaches that leadto the successful adoption of ETC are described. The development of the next generation ETC named Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) is explained. DSRC is not only limited to the expressway but also covers general roads. Therefore, DSRC-system will give more convenient and safer service for a wider range of people. The four keys to the successful implementation of ETC are explained. For the covering abstract see E134653.
