Abstract

The European Union co-finances studies and deployment projects in the field of telematics and traffic management mainly through the budget for the trans-European network for transport (more than 60 M ecu have been allocated to RTT (road transport telematics) projects in 1995-97). The most significant projects are those dealing with cross-border services. In particular five so called "Euro-regional" projects involving most of the EU Member States (12 out of 15) have been set up to promote trans-European transport telematics services. These projects are seen as the driving force for RTT deployment and have become key elements in the recently approved EU Action Plan in this area.
