Abstract

This chapter compares the mobility patterns of various European countries. Figures are presented for a) gross domestic product, b) population density, c) number of cars, d) distances travelled, e) modal split, f) length of motorway, h) car prices and i) fuel prices. The evolution in mobility since 1970 is traced for 13 European countries. A model is then described which simulates developments in car and train travel in 9 EC countries between 1970 and 1985. Factors considered include a) population size, b) age group distribution, c) car ownership growth not due to population dynamics, d) employment and e) petrol prices. The differences observed between countries are discussed.
