The economics of Trans-European networks are considered in relation to the added value created by these networks and their cost. Reports of working groups on: peripherality and accessibility; trans-Alpine freight transport; competition and complementarity; and the role of actors are provided. Intermodal transport on the Trans-European network is discussed in relation to demand and competition among transport modes on routes and between transport operators. It is suggested that new strategic infrastructure requires evaluation and planning at the international level. The effects of this on European policy are discussed.
