The European Framework Architecture for ITS, realised in the KAREN project, was delivered in Autumn 2000 and is available on CD_ROM. It consists of a European set of user needs, a functional architecture, a physical architecture and a communications architecture, as well as reference models, a cost-benefit report and recommendations for standardisation and for deployment. Interest inside the European Union, and also outside, is great and still increasing. A number of member states are developing national ITS architectures and do so directly derived from, or in close relation with the European Framework. Now follow-up activities have started to support this process and safeguard coherence through Europe. A Project for maintenance, for training and for special user support, FRAME-S, runs under the EC 5th Framework IST Programme. A so-called Thematic Network for Architecture Users, FRAME-NET, will be the operational user platform, which will be the base for co-operation between national- and other architectures and give guidance to the other projects. FRAME-NET and its goals are described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E209471.
