Abstract

Fact: in 1999, 1.31 million accidents occurred on the European Union’s road network, causing 42,122 deaths and 1.7 million injured of which 170,000 remained permanent invalids. This document explains why current road safety policies should be rethought in view of adopting an integrated approach which recognises the interplay of driver behaviour, vehicle design and the infrastructure.
